SUMMARY:Belonging at the Young Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Artist Tom Young, residing in Lebanon for the past 15 years, presents an eclectic range of artworks at Gemmayze’s cultural heart. His oil paintings, depicting cityscapes and nature, delve into the essence of ‘belonging’ and identity formation. Despite being British, Young considers Lebanon his ‘home’, transcending the turmoil of recent years.\nBeyond the surface, Young delves into the human paradox: the quest for peace, stability, and connection to our past and identity. However, he contemplates that true fulfillment entails being complete without longing.\nHis paintings evoke varied emotions – nostalgia for an imagined past, yearning for serenity through Lebanese landscapes, and confronting the present political climate.\nYoung’s renown extends to architectural projects across Lebanon, with works like Villa Paradiso, The Rose House, and Beit Beirut forming part of his displayed collection.\nThis project signifies Young’s return to Gemmayze post-2020’s port explosion, symbolizing cultural defiance. Despite damage to his studio and gallery, recently renovated, the space also doubles as his working studio. Visitors can witness his creative process, attend workshops, film screenings, and concerts. The space already saw creative performances during a festival earlier this year, showcasing Young’s vision of providing free public access to his art, children’s workshops, and fostering others’ creativity.\n
