Marwan Rechmaoui is a conceptual sculptor known for his work with concrete, metal, rubber, and wax. Exploring the socio-geographies of cities, Rechmaoui's latest exhibition at the Cheriff Tabet Gallery from May 7 to 24 revolves around the theme of play. Reflecting on childhood memories, he examines Beirut's streets through the lens of games, prompting questions about the societal impact of toys.
Rechmaoui draws from a sketchbook from the 1990s, recreating childhood pastimes like marbles, kites, and hopscotch outlines in various mediums like oil pastel on concrete. Embedded in concrete, his poetic works depict symbols of childhood innocence, like pine trees and flowers. Beneath this playful surface, Rechmaoui offers a social commentary influenced by Roland Barthes’ essay "Toys," linking childhood play to adult identity and societal structures.
Viewers are invited to reflect on the connection between childhood games and societal hierarchies, including those influenced by Lebanon's history of conflict. Rechmaoui's work challenges us to reconsider power dynamics through the lens of childhood ingenuity and societal complexity.
Marwan Rechmaoui, born in 1964 in Beirut, studied sculpture and painting in Boston and New York. His work has been exhibited globally, including at MoMA (New York), Villa Empain (Brussels), and Sharjah Art Foundation. Rechmaoui's sculptures are held in prestigious collections like MoMA (New York), Tate Modern (London), and Centre Pompidou (Paris).
