AUB Outdoors: a Celebration of Culture, Community and Creativity

by LBTAdmin

AUB Outdoors is not just an event; it’s a vibrant annual festival that encapsulates the spirit of the American University of Beirut (AUB). Taking place on May 25 and 26, from noon to 11 PM, and organized entirely by AUB students under the guidance of the Office of Student Affairs (OSA), this festival transforms the upper campus into a bustling hub of entertainment, cultural exchange and philanthropy. It attracts a diverse audience, including high school students, university students, families, AUB alumni and staff, making it a highlight of the social calendar for the AUB community and beyond.

The launch of AUB Outdoors

The origins of AUB Outdoors date back to 1982, when it was first known as AUB Indoors. Initially organized by various clubs and societies within the university, the event quickly grew in popularity. To accommodate larger crowds and enhance the experience, it transitioned into the expansive outdoor festival we know today. Despite facing challenges that led to a three-year hiatus, AUB Outdoors has persevered, maintaining its status as a beloved tradition within the AUB community.

Purpose and mission

AUB Outdoors aims to celebrate diversity, foster community spirit and provide unforgettable experiences through an eclectic mix of activities. From thrilling games and tantalizing cuisine to captivating musical performances, the festival offers something for everyone. The mission of AUB Outdoors is to create an empowering community that champions unity in diversity through vibrant cultural celebrations and world-class entertainment. As a student-driven platform, it donates proceeds to support peers facing adversities, ensuring accessibility to quality education.

Vision

AUB Outdoors aspires to be the leading student-run platform in the Middle East, organizing impactful events focused on cultural enrichment, talent incubation and social responsibility. The vision is to empower students to pursue their academic dreams despite hardships, setting new standards of excellence in university events.

Record-breaking attendance

This year, the organizers anticipate hosting up to 20,000 attendees over the course of the two-day event. This represents a significant increase in attendance over the past few years, demonstrating the enduring popularity and appeal of AUB Outdoors.

A festival with a cause

Proceeds generated by AUB Outdoors are channeled to charitable schemes, particularly focusing on providing need-based scholarships for students. By donating all profits from the event, AUB Outdoors reaffirms its commitment to supporting the AUB community and those in need, thereby reinforcing its role as a pillar of social service within the community.

Disco Fever: a thematic tribute

This year’s theme, “Disco Fever,” pays homage to the era that witnessed the launch of AUB Outdoors. Born during a time of political instability and uncertainty, AUB Outdoors was, and continues to be, an outlet of creative expression for AUB students. As the festival celebrates its 40th edition, it honors the 1980s, the era of disco in Lebanon, which inspired the transition from AUB Indoors to AUB Outdoors. For the organizers, disco represents celebration, creative expression and unity.
