Hidden Among the Pines: Escape to SaQi Guesthouse

by emmaferzly

Nestled in the mountain village of Saqi Rechmaya in the Byblos Caza, surrounded by pine forest and gardens scented with aromatics, SaQi Guesthouse
offers a quieter way to experience Lebanon. Housed within a nearly 200-year-old former monastery and seminary, the women-led guesthouse is home to just five thoughtfully designed rooms, creating an intimate retreat where nature quietly sets the pace.

Less than an hour from Beirut yet worlds away from its rhythm, SaQi Guesthouse (+961 3 279 849) invites guests into a slower way of living. Guests wake to breakfasts made by the seasons, prepared with local and seasonal ingredients, including fresh eggs from the chicken coop, homemade preserves, village cheeses and herbs gathered from the garden, spend afternoons wandering among roses and aromatics and settle into the rare calm of mountain life, where silence feels less like absence and more like luxury.

A Monastery Reimagined

Dating back nearly two centuries, the property first served as a monastery before later becoming a seminary known locally as “the school.” After years of abandonment, it was carefully restored by Gisèle, the owner and her family. Rather than erase its past, the restoration preserved it. Stone walls, shaded terraces and original architectural details remain, while the five rooms were created with a distinct personality, they are shaped by the rhythm of the old building and the surrounding landscape. Some open onto the pine forest, others onto the gardens, but all share the same sense of peace.

At SaQi, each room becomes part of a wider experience of stillness. Interiors are simple and tactile, with natural textures and vintage pieces that reflect the character of a lived-in mountain home rather than a typical stay. Outside, life expands into the landscape. Guests move between shaded terraces, reading corners and garden paths, where time feels unstructured. The surrounding pine forest is ever-present, with birdsong, rustling trees and the occasional movement of wildlife shaping the atmosphere of each stay.

Food Rooted in Place

Meals define the rhythm of the day. Breakfasts and long lunches are served seasonally, shaped by what the land provides. Ingredients come from nearby producers and the surrounding farms, with eggs collected fresh from the chicken coop, herbs picked on site and traditional mountain recipes that have been reimagined forming the base of the kitchen. Dining takes place outdoors whenever possible, around communal tables that encourage lingering, conversation and connection to place.

A Softer Kind of Hospitality

Beyond its setting, SaQi is guided by a philosophy of slow hospitality rooted in land and community. Local producers and village workers remain central to its operation, while sustainability is integrated quietly into daily life rather than presented as a concept. Here, the experience is defined less by excess and more by attention; to light, to silence, to the rhythm of the mountains and to the character of the guesthouse.
