Smar Jbeil is a hilltop village in the Batroun District, located around 500 meters above sea level. With its ancient fortress, churches, panoramic views of the Mediterranean and Mount Lebanon, boutique wineries and distilleries, and welcoming guesthouses, it has become one of North Lebanon’s most charming escapes.

Getting There

Smar Jbeil is located around 53 km from Beirut, around an hour and a half by car. It can be reached via the Beirut–Tripoli highway, exiting toward Batroun or Byblos and following the signs up to the village.

What to Do

Smar Jbeil Citadel

This 12th‑century fortress offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Visitors can explore the citadel’s interior, admire the layers of history from the Phoenicians, Romans and Crusaders, and take in panoramic vistas of the sea and mountains.

Saint Nohra Church

Built in the 17th century, this church is one of Smar Jbeil’s most important religious sites. It is known for its beautiful architecture and serene setting.

Virgin Mary Church

A majestic perennial oak tree grown inside a church, its sprawling branches provide shade and a sense of calm. It’s a natural landmark that adds to the village’s charm.

Atibaia Winery

Set in a restored family house, Atibaia (+961 3 328 888) is a boutique winery known for its elegant red and white wines. Tastings and tours are available by appointment.

Three Brothers Gin

One of Lebanon’s leading craft distilleries Three Brothers Gin (+961 71 333 501), produces small-batch gin infused with local botanicals. Their Smar Jbeil location makes for a unique experience in a historic building.
