The Timeless Genius of Ziad Rahbani and the Music of a Nation

by LBTAdmin

Ziad Rahbani, one of Lebanon’s most beloved and influential artists, has left an enduring mark on Arabic music and theater. Here, we pay tribute to his musical genius and remember some of his most significant works.

Born in 1956 to legendary singer Fairouz and composer Assi Rahbani, Ziad grew up surrounded by musical brilliance but quickly stepped out of his parents’ shadow to build a legacy all his own.

A gifted composer, playwright and pianist, Ziad revolutionized Arabic music by fusing classical Oriental melodies with jazz, funk and blues. His innovative arrangements and heartfelt lyrics captured the imagination of an entire generation. His compositions for Fairouz such as “Ouverture 83,” “Habbaytak Ta Nseet El Naoum” and “Bi Layl W Chiti” are considered masterpieces, bridging the old with the new in a deeply moving way.

Equally powerful was his work in theater. Through landmark plays like “Sahriyye,” “Bennesbeh Labokra Shou?,” and “Shi Fashel” and “Film Ameriki Taweel,” Ziad brought everyday Lebanese stories to the stage. His works reflect the soul of Lebanon — its humor, warmth, contradictions and longing. One of his most acclaimed productions, “Bala Wala Shi” (“Nothing and Everything”), stands out as a shining example of his ability to weave music, wit and introspection into a single, unforgettable performance. In it, he explores the complexity of human relationships and emotions through musical storytelling that transcends generations.

Ziad once said: “If you want to say something true, just say it simply.” And it is this simplicity, paired with honesty and a deep cultural sensitivity, that defines his work. He doesn’t just entertain; he reflects the collective memory and identity of a people.

Ziad Rahbani’s relationship with Lebanon is one of deep affection and understanding. His music and plays express the spirit of the Lebanese people — their resilience, creativity, nostalgia and love for life. In every note and every line, he brings Lebanon to life.

His legacy is not only in what he created but in how deeply he understood and expressed the Lebanese soul.
