Blind Date 2.0 at Sfeir Semler Gallery
Running from March 13 until July 27, 2024, Sfeir Semler Gallery presents the second edition of ‘The Blind Date,’ featuring a group exhibition with artists from beyond the gallery’s roster. All five invited artists are young females with ties to the Arab-speaking world, presenting diverse practices and expressions.
The exhibition delves into cultural heritage, identity, and societal issues, urging viewers to contemplate resistance, daily life, and interconnected crises through contemporary art. The artists contribute to a broader discourse on global complexities, offering insights into personal experiences and collective struggles.
- Alia Farid, a filmmaker and sculptor, delves into lesser-known histories, addressing the impact of extractive industries in Iraq and Kuwait, and the migration of Arabs and Asians to Latin America and the Caribbean through tapestries.
- Daniele Genadry experiments with painting, photography, and print, exploring light perception through overexposed landscapes.
- Tala Worrell, a Lebanese-American painter, navigates her identity through abstract, gestural paintings.
- Bayan Kiwan, a Palestinian-Jordanian artist, examines place and memory, depicting women’s sociality through figurative works.
- Farah Al Qasimi scrutinizes postcolonial power structures and gender in multimedia works, questioning global trade and consumerism.
