Lebanese pianist, composer and entrepreneur Fady Abi Saad, better known as Aleph, is an expert at entertaining crowds around the world with his progressive oriental music. We caught up with him in Beirut to learn more about his musical influences and passion for Lebanon.

What can you tell us about your musical journey?

My musical journey began at a very young age when I discovered my passion for music through a small wooden piano. I started composing my own music at the age of 11. Today, I consider myself blessed to have performed in some of the most renowned theaters including Olympia de Paris, Pierre Boulez in Berlin among many others.

How did the name Aleph come about?

The name Aleph represents the first letter of the alphabet, symbolizing beginnings and creativity. It embodies my desire to blend Oriental music with Western melodies and piano to create a musical fusion.

Who has guided you along the way?

In music, I am inspired by the Cuban pianist Bebo Valdés. In life, my inspiration is my mother, Souraya Ramia Abi Saad.

What has been your most memorable moment on stage?

One of the most memorable moments on stage for me was giving my first solo concert at the age of 14, where I performed my own arrangement of Chopin’s Mazurkas. The energy and connection with the audience during that performance will stay with me forever.

What do you miss when you are away from Lebanon?

I miss the authenticity of the country, the warmth of its people, and the vibrant energy of Beirut. Lebanon holds a special place in my heart, and its essence inspires much of my music; it is home.

When you are not performing or composing, what are you usually doing?

You will find me cooking and enjoying time with family and friends in my hometown, Ehmej.

Where do you find inspiration?

Inspiration for me can be found in everyday experiences, nature, emotions and cultural traditions.

What’s your top tip for tourists coming to Lebanon for the first time?

My tip for tourists visiting Lebanon is to immerse themselves in the country’s rich history, culinary delights and breathtaking landscapes. Be open to experiencing the warmth and hospitality of the Lebanese people and you’ll create unforgettable memories.

What are your upcoming projects?

I am currently working on several exciting projects, including new compositions, collaborations and entrepreneurial adventures.

What’s your message to young Lebanese artists and musicians starting out in the industry?

To young Lebanese artists, I would say: stay true to your passion, persevere through challenges and never stop learning and growing. Embrace your unique identity and cultural heritage, and let it shine through your art. Remember that every setback is an opportunity for growth, and with dedication and determination, you can achieve your dreams in the music industry, just like I did.
