Ziad Doueiri’s award-winning film has scooped an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film 2018. “The Insult” is the first Lebanese film to be in the running for an Academy Award.
The drama, starring top actors such as Kamal al-Basha, Camille Salameh, and Rita Hayek, previewed at the 2017 Venice Film Festival, where it won al-Basha the esteemed Volpi Cup for Best Actor and received a five-minute standing ovation.
Other contenders in the Best Foreign Film category include “On Body and Soul” by Hungarian filmmaker Ildikó Enyedi, “Loveless” by Russian director Andrey Petrovich Zvyagintsev, “The Square” by Swedish director Claes Olle Ruben Östlund and “A Fantastic Woman” by Sebastián Lelio, an Argentinian-born Chilean director.
The 90th Academy Awards will take place in Hollywood on 4 March 2018. Whatever the result, the nomination itself marks a huge milestone for the Lebanese filmmaking industry.
